PRIVATE SECTOR AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS REQUEST IMMEDIATE HELP FOR DISPLACED PUERTO RICAN/U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS FAMILIES

Miami, Florida – Nearly one year since Hurricane Maria hit the islands of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, many evacuees remain in limbo due to government officials’ inability to provide a housing solution for displaced families. As the July 23rd termination date of the court-ordered extension of the FEMA Transitional Sheltering Assistance Program approaches, Community Based Organizations, members of the South Florida Puerto Rican community and elected officials join with Florida State Representative Robert Asencio, Chair of the Miami Dade Delegation Puerto Rico/Caribbean Hurricane Relief & Transition Committee, in hosting a Press Conference to address the looming deadline and the Government’s inaction. Florida’s affordable housing crisis is not just hurting Puerto Ricans and USVI residing in our state as a consequence of the hurricane – it is hurting resident Floridians every day. It is Hurricane Season once again. We cannot continue to put a patch job on the housing crisis that only grows worse when a natural disaster strikes. We need to prioritize funding and work on a solution to Florida’s affordable housing crisis. The Sadowski Fund is one key element to resolving this problem. The community and local organizations have stepped up and done their part. They cannot continue to act as first responders in this crisis. The State must stand up and do its part.
